ABBA의 탄생       

                                            

스웨덴 출신의 가수 ABBA 아바는 두 쌍의 부부로 이루어진 혼성그룹이다

비요른 울바에우스 Bjorn Ulvaeus - 기타, 보컬

배니 앤더슨 Benny Andersson - 키보드, 보컬

아그네사 팔트스코그 Agnetha Faltskog - 보컬

애니프리드 린지스타드 - Anni-Fria lyngstad - 보컬

 

그룹 ABBA는 처음에 두 명으로 출발했다

ABBA중 남자인 비요른 울바에우스와 베니 앤더슨은 스웨덴에서 인지도 있었던

그룹에 각자 속해 있었으며 나름 알아주는 뮤지션들이었다

1966년 두 사람이 "듀오"라는 그룹으로 활동한다

그러다 1972년 People Need Love 라는 곡을 레코딩 중에 자신들의 여자친구였던

아그네사 팔트스코그 와 프리드 린지스타드에게 백 보컬을 맡긴다

그 결과 곡은 히트를 치면서 예상보다 반응이 상당했다

다음해 이들 네 명은 그룹을 결성한다

     

자신들의 이름 첫 이니셜을 따서 아바(ABBA)를 만들고

Ring Ring 이라는 곡으로 유러비젼 송 컨테스트에 도전하지만 실패로 마무리된다

실패를 맛본 아바는 이듬해에 Waterloo 라는 곡으로 다시한번 도전하고

컨테스트에서 대상을 차지한다

그렇게 ABBA의 이름이 알려지고 세계적인 팝가수가 되기 위한 길이 열린다

당시 아바의 노래는 인기차트에서 내려올줄 몰랐었을 만큼 명곡들이 많았고

세계의 팝팬들에게 듣는 즐거움을 선사했다

아바의 노래가 시들해져서 순위에서 내려올 쯤이면 아바의 신곡이 나와서

그 신곡이 이전 아바의 1위곡을 누르고 1위를 했다고 하니

당시 아바의 인기가 어느정도였나 가늠해 볼 수 있다

"Waterloo"는 1974년 3월 발매된 아바의 2집 앨범이다.

유로비전 송 컨테스트에서 대상에 해당하는 그랑프리를 수상한

이후 아바의 성공의 결정적인 역할을 한 앨범.

2집 앨범인 "Waterloo"를 통해 본격적으로 "ABBA"라는 공식명칭으로 활동을 하게 됨

"SOS"는 메가히트곡이다.

 

특히 "Mamma Mia"는 영국과 미국에서 큰 인기를 얻는다.

빌보드 싱글차트에서는 32위로 그리 높은 순위는 아니나 판매량면에서는 앨범의 다른 수록곡을 능가한다.

2008년에는 영화로 만들어지기도한

초반 피아노 건반 소리와 함께 시작하는 경쾌한 음이 너무나 사랑스러운 곡

명실상부한 유럽 최고의 그룹이 된 ABBA.

그들의 음악은 여러 영화에 삽입이 되었을 뿐 아니라 그들의 콘서트 실황이

다큐멘터리 영화로까지 촬영되어 세계 여러 극장에서 상영되기까지 된다.

당시는 냉전 시대.

미국과 동유럽의 힘싸움으로 아바의 앨범 판매에 영향을 주게 되지만.

이미 유럽 최고의 달러 박스가 된 그들을 막을 수는 없었다.

 

5집은 가사보다는 멜로디 라인이 아름다운 곡이 많다. 

B사이드 마지막 세곡("Thank You for the Music", "I Wonder (Departure)",

 "I'm A Marionette")은

아바를 위해 만들어진 미니뮤지컬 "The Girl With The Golden Hair"를 위해 만들어졌다

영국에서만 첫주에 40만장이 넘는 앨범이 판매되며, 그 당시 최고 기록을 수립한다.  

싱글곡 중 "Does Your Mother Know",

"Voulez-Vous", "Angeleyes", "Chiquitita"가

빌보드 차트에 진입하며 인기를 끌었는데...

뭐니뭐니해도 이 앨범의 최고 히트곡은 "I Have a Dream"이 아닐까?

뮤지컬 맘마미아에서 불렸고, 웨스트 라이프(West Life)가 리메이크도 했다

"The Visitors"는 아바의 8집이며 마지막 앨범으로 1981년 11월 30일 발매되었다.

신시사이저를 이용한 전자음을 앨범에 활용하는 등

이전 음악들에 비해 많은 변화를 시도하였으나  

이전 앨범에 비해 인기가 크게 떨어졌을 뿐 아니라 앨범 발매전

아바의 마지막 커플 프리드와 베니가 이혼을 하며 많은 팬들을 실망시켰다

그나마 "When All is Said and Done"과 one of Us"가 인기를 얻어

아바의 마지막 자존심을 지켜주었다
